Project Spotlight: Columbian Village – Creating Safe, Comfortable Spaces for Seniors in Saskatoon

Vanguard Specialty Products is proud to have contributed to one of Saskatoon’s most anticipated community developments — Columbian Village, a newly opened seniors’ residence that represents a meaningful step forward in the city’s efforts to provide safe, high-quality housing for older adults.

Officially opened this week, Columbian Village features 90 independent living apartments and 43 assisted living units. The facility is designed to meet the evolving needs of an aging population, offering thoughtfully planned accommodations that balance independence, support, and community. As part of this important initiative, Vanguard was entrusted with supplying and installing all the window coverings throughout the residence.

A Focus on Style, Function, and Safety

To complement the clean, residential feel of the building’s interior design, Vanguard installed 2" cordless wood window shades across all units and common areas. These shades were selected not only for their timeless, elegant appearance but also for their superior functionality and safety. With their woodgrain texture and neutral tones, they seamlessly integrate into the building’s design while providing residents with flexible light control and privacy.

What truly sets these shades apart is their cordless operation — a feature that reflects both a modern aesthetic and a deep commitment to resident safety. Cordless blinds eliminate dangling cords, making them easier to operate for seniors while also reducing the risk of entanglement. This is especially critical in multi-residential environments serving seniors, children, or individuals with limited mobility.

Meeting Canadian Safety Standards

The window coverings installed at Columbian Village comply with the Canadian Consumer Product Safety Act – Corded Window Coverings Regulations. These updated regulations mandate safer alternatives to corded blinds in order to protect vulnerable populations. Vanguard remains committed to not only meeting but exceeding these safety standards on every project we undertake — and Columbian Village is no exception.

More Than a Residence — A Community

Project Spotlight: Columbian Village – Creating Safe, Comfortable Spaces for Seniors in Saskatoon

Columbian Village is more than just a seniors' housing facility. It is a community that prioritizes comfort, dignity, and quality of life. The residence offers a mix of independent and assisted living options, allowing seniors to age in place with the right level of support. Each design element, from the common spaces to the private apartments, reflects an understanding of what seniors need to feel at home — safety, accessibility, and a warm, welcoming environment.

We are honored to have played a role in bringing this vision to life and to have worked alongside developers and stakeholders who share our values. Projects like Columbian Village demonstrate what is possible when thoughtful design and community care come together — and we are proud that our window coverings could contribute to the comfort and wellbeing of Saskatoon’s seniors for years to come.
