The new signs interfered with the original shade placement, creating a challenge: how could the existing Sentry Shading roller shades be reinstalled without compromising the signage or replacing the system entirely?

When Vanguard Specialty Products installed Sentry Shading roller shades at the SIXT Downtown Portland location, the original installation was designed to provide clean, functional solar control for the storefront windows.

Later in the project, the signage company removed the shades so new window signage could be installed. Once the signage was in place, the mounting conditions had changed. The new signs interfered with the original shade placement, creating a challenge: how could the existing Sentry Shading roller shades be reinstalled without compromising the signage or replacing the system entirely?

The initial recommendation was to consider window film instead of reinstalling the roller shades. Vanguard Specialty Products took a different approach. Because these were our shades and our installation, we assessed the site conditions, reviewed the original shade layout, and determined that the existing Sentry Shading system could be preserved with a custom-fabricated bracket solution.

The solution required more than a standard reinstall. Vanguard designed a custom L-bracket that would offset the shade mounting position enough to clear the new signage while still supporting the roller shades and fascia. Because the four shades were installed end-to-end, the bracket layout had to account for both end brackets and shared center brackets between adjacent shades.

Finished custom brackets fabricated in matte black to support the reinstalled roller shade system.

After field review, measuring, design coordination, and bracket fabrication, Vanguard Specialty Products reinstalled the Sentry Shading roller shades with the new signage in place. The finished solution maintained the clean storefront appearance, preserved the original roller shade system, and restored full functionality.

The result

The SIXT Downtown Portland project is a strong example of practical field problem-solving. Instead of removing a functional shade system and replacing it with window film, Vanguard Specialty Products engineered a custom installation solution that allowed the Sentry Shading roller shades to remain part of the final storefront design.
