Our recent collaboration with Woodburn Construction on the Yamhill Valley Campus (YVC) – Chemeketa Community College, Building 2 Tenant Improvement in McMinnville, Oregon is a great example of that approach in action.

Overcoming Specification Challenges

This project presented a unique challenge from the outset. The original specification called for a roller shade system that needed to be fully fabricated in the factory, limiting field assembly options and narrowing the pool of viable manufacturers.

Additionally, the project required coupled manual roller shades at approximately 10 feet in height—a configuration that relatively few manufacturers can produce reliably.

Working closely with Woodburn Construction, our team stepped in to identify and secure an approved substitution that would meet both the performance requirements and the project’s construction timeline.

Engineering the Right Solution

To meet the specification requirements, we recommended a cassette-style roller shade system. This approach provided several key advantages:

• Factory-Assembled System – Cassette shades are shipped fully assembled, aligning perfectly with the spec requirements and eliminating field-built inconsistencies.

• Clean, Integrated Appearance – The enclosed cassette delivers a modern, finished look suitable for educational environments.

• Enhanced Durability – Factory-controlled assembly ensures consistent quality and long-term performance.

We also sourced a manufacturer capable of producing the coupled manual shade system at the required height, ensuring smooth operation and structural integrity across larger spans.

Hands-On Support & Submittal Success

Beyond product selection, our team played an active role in moving the project forward:

• Assisted in the submittal and substitution approval process

• Fabricated a working sample shade for the architect to review and test in real-world conditions

• Collaborated with the design team to ensure the solution aligned with both performance expectations and aesthetic goals
